Consultant cardiothoracic and congenital surgeon, Datuk Dr. Hamdan Leman smiled as we pointed that out but we later learned that he started out as a general surgeon! Only a little later in his career did he move on to cardiac surgery after a chance encounter with our Chairman and consultant cardiothoracic surgeon, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Yahya Awang😮
As part of our heart team in the Heart & Lung Centre of Excellence program, Dr. Hamdan is frequently in the operating theatre scrubbing in with other surgeons, Tan Sri Yahya or Dr. John Chan. He is mindful about keeping one day free though; to allow himself to go to Hospital Serdang and help out with the congenital cases there. He is immensely passionate about congenital heart surgery and went on to establish a non-profit organization, Yayasan Jantung Kongenital Malaysia to raise awareness and raise funds for children suffering from congenital heart disease.
Within the fraternity of cardiothoracic surgeons, he is highly regarded as one of the few existing “rare-breed” cardiothoracic surgeons in the country who is proficient in both fields of adult cardiothoracic and congenital cardiac surgery.

In addition to providing comprehensive care for cardiovascular diseases, research and education is one of the pillars we adopt in establishing ourselves as a centre of excellence. Initiated in 2018 and guided by our clinical research committee, our team of clinicians and research assistants have been actively involved in multiple research projects including benchmarking ourselves against the national registry. The purpose of benchmarking in healthcare is to improve efficiency, quality of care, patient safety and patient satisfaction.
At a glance, we see a higher proportion of patients with complex diseases such as multivessel disease, bifurcation lesions, left main disease, complex and chronic total occlusions when compared to the national registry. Our success rate for successful intervention is also higher! 🥰
