CVSKL’s Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. John Chan Kok Meng, was recently invited to speak on “Care for Type A Aortic Dissection in Malaysia” at the Aortic Dissection Awareness Day UK 2024 held at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Scotland, U.K. The theme of the meeting was “Aortic Dissection Surgery Around the World”. Dr. John Chan joined world-renowned experts from the UK, USA, Europe, Canada, Brazil and Australia in sharing their experience in treating and caring for patients with Type A Aortic Dissection.

The meeting highlighted the importance of considering aortic dissection as a possible cause of chest pain. A tear in the aorta, also known as an aortic dissection, typically causes severe chest pain. The diagnosis is made with a CT scan. When the tear involves the first part of the aorta (the ascending aorta), urgent surgery is needed to prevent complete rupture of the aorta and death.

Dr John Chan emphasised that prevention of aortic dissection can be achieved by good control of blood pressure and by treating aortic aneurysms early once it reaches a certain size. Elective surgery on an aortic aneurysm is much safer and carries a lower risk than emergency surgery in an acute aortic dissection.
