Massive blood loss is a major challenge for haematological and blood transfusion services that jeopardizes patient survival in many clinical settings. Massive blood loss is arbitrarily defined as the loss of one blood volume within a 24-hour period, the normal adult blood volume being approximately 7% of ideal body weight in adults and 8-9% in children.

CVSKL recently conducted an in-house Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) drill organized by the Blood Transfusion Committee with the support of Consultant Doctors and other healthcare staff. The objective of the MTP drill was to evaluate the response and management of a massive blood loss event which was accessed by internal observers right from the moment of MTP activation, blood product ordering, communication between departments, and blood transfusion process up to completion of the MTP cycle. Regular drills as such can improve awareness and confidence to ensure that the blood transfusion chain works efficiently.
