At CVSKL, we believe early detection allows for early intervention and thus, a better outcome. Together, our NICL (Non-Invasive Cardiovascular Lab) & Radiology team perform a variety of specialised diagnostics tests (Eg. Stress Test) which will assist our doctors in making an accurate diagnosis. Our team is committed to providing high-quality care for our patients.
Located on the first floor, CVSKL houses the latest 512-slice Revolution Apex CT scanner, which creates detailed images enabled by the latest advances in science and technology.
The CT scanner combines a series of high-quality x-ray images taken from different angles around your body and uses digital processing to create cross-sectional images (slices) of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside your body. From these images, our team of doctors are able to:
- Identify vulnerable deposits of plaque in the heart & surrounding vessels
- Detect early signs of stroke
- Detect early signs of cancer in major organs
- Perform non-invasive total body angiogram accurately
- Perform a CT coronary calcium scan to assess the risks for heart attack
Key Difference
- Calcium Score: Used as a screening tool to detect the presence of coronary artery disease in people who may not show symptoms.
- Angiogram: Used for diagnostic purposes when symptoms are present, or when a more detailed view of coronary artery blockages is needed to guide treatment.
Invasiveness
- Calcium Score: Non-invasive, does not require IV contrast dye.
- Angiogram: Invasive, requires a catheter inserted for IV contrast dye.
Level of Detail
- Calcium Score: Provides information on the presence of calcium deposits but does not give a detailed view of the blood flow or severity of blockages.
- Angiogram: Offers a detailed view of the coronary arteries, showing the exact location and severity of blockages.
Risks
- Calcium Score: Low risk, as the test is non-invasive and involves minimal radiation exposure.
- Angiogram: Higher risk due to its invasive nature, including a small risk of bleeding, infection, or damage to the arteries.
Who is it For?
- Calcium Score: Ideal for individuals without symptoms but at risk of heart disease due to factors like family history, age, or smoking.
- Angiogram: Suitable for individuals with symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath, or when there is a need to plan for interventional procedures like angioplasty or bypass surgery.
A calcium score is a great first step for individuals who are at moderate risk for heart disease but are not showing symptoms. It’s particularly valuable for those in the following categories:
- Adults over 40: The risk of heart disease increases with age.
- People with risk factors: Such as high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease.
- Smokers or individuals with an unhealthy diet: These factors can increase the likelihood of plaque buildup in the arteries.
By detecting the presence of coronary artery disease early, the calcium score can help guide lifestyle changes or the need for further investigation. If the score is high, further cardiac investigations, such as an angiogram, may be recommended.
When Would You Need an Angiogram?
An angiogram may be recommended when symptoms of heart disease are present or when there is a need for more detailed information about the condition of the coronary arteries. Common reasons to choose an angiogram include:
- Chest pain: When it’s unclear whether the chest pain is caused by heart disease.
- Shortness of breath or fatigue: Unexplained symptoms that may point to a cardiovascular issue.
- Family history of heart disease: If someone has a family history of heart attacks or other heart-related conditions, an angiogram can provide a clearer picture.
- Planning for treatment: An angiogram is often required before undergoing treatments like angioplasty or bypass surgery to determine the extent of arterial blockages.
