What is Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)?

The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body and carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body. It extends from the chest into the abdomen, where it divides into the arteries that supply blood to the legs.

An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) occurs when a weakened section of the abdominal aorta enlarges or bulges outward, similar to a balloon. Over time, the wall of the aorta may become thinner and weaker, increasing the risk of rupture. A ruptured aneurysm can cause severe internal bleeding and may become life-threatening.

Many small aneurysms do not cause symptoms and are often discovered during routine health screening or imaging tests. However, as aneurysm increases in size, the risk of complication may also increase, and treatment may be required.

What is aortic dissection?

An aortic dissection occurs when a tear develops in the inner layer of the aorta. This allows blood to enter the wall of the artery, causing the layers to separate (dissect), creating a false channel for blood flow. It is a medical emergency in acute cases and requires immediate attention.

Type A – Aortic Dissection

Type A aortic dissection involves the ascending aorta, the portion of the aorta closest to the heart. This is considered a surgical emergency because it carries a high risk of life threatening complications, including aortic rupture, cardiac tamponade (compression of the heart caused by fluid around the heart), stroke, damage to the aortic valve and reduced blood flow to the brain, heart or other vital organs. 

Type B – Aortic Dissection

Type B aortic dissection occurs in the descending aorta, the portion of the main artery that carries blood from the chest to the rest of the body. Many patients can be managed with medical treatment. However, urgent intervention maybe necessary if complications develop.

  • Persistent or worsening pain
  • Rapid enlargement of the dissection 
  • Reduced blood flow to organ
  • Signs of impending rupture
  • Failure of medical treatment.

Treatment Options

What is EVAR (Endovascular Aneurysm Repair)?

Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) is a minimally invasive procedure used to repair abdominal aortic aneurysms. Instead of a large incision, small incisions are made in the groin to access the femoral arteries. Through these openings, a specialised stent graft (a fabric tube supported by a metal framework) is guided into the affected area of the aorta. Once positioned, the stent graft is expanded to seal off the aneurysm and create a new pathway for blood flow. The graft remains permanently inside the blood vessel and continues to support blood flow.

What is TEVAR (Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair)?

Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat diseases affecting the thoracic aorta (the chest portion of the aorta), including:

  • Thoracic aortic aneurysms
  • Selected Type B aortic dissections
  • Other complex thoracic aortic conditions

The procedure involves delivering a stent graft through blood vessels, usually via the groin, and positioning it within the diseased segment of the thoracic aorta. Once deployed, the graft creates a new channel for blood flow, reinforces the weakened aortic wall, and reduces the risk of rupture or disease progression.

TEVAR offers a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery for suitable patients.
